About Cave City, Kentucky
Landmarks and Places in Cave City
- The city's defining landmark is the cave that gave it its name, which lies within the town limits and is not Mammoth Cave. A small creek ran through that cave and was used by the L&N Railroad as a source of water; called Sink Hole Spring, it was the town's only water supply at the time. Mammoth Cave National Park, whose center is 10 miles west along Kentucky Route 70, is the region's principal attraction and the reason the Knob City Land Company laid the town out as a resort. The Exit 53 interchange on Interstate 65 is the city's commercial gateway, and U.S. Route 31W, the Dixie Highway, runs through the center of town. The neighbouring Barren County cities of Glasgow and Park City lie 10 miles southeast and nearby to the west respectively.
The Cave City Economy
- Tourism is the main industry and motels and restaurants cluster at the Exit 53 interchange of Interstate 65 with Kentucky Routes 70 and 90 to serve visitors. The visitor trade is old: in the era of passenger rail, Louisville and Nashville Railroad trains discharged Mammoth Cave tourists at Cave City to be shuttled onward to the cave.
