History of Georgetown

• Native peoples have lived along Elkhorn Creek in what is now Scott County for at least 15,000 years.
• The historic Shawnee people occupied this area at the time of European encounter.
• Anglo-American exploration dates to a June 1774 surveying expedition out of Fincastle County, Virginia under Colonel John Floyd. Virginia granted him a 1,000-acre claim for military service. He named the place Royal Spring but never settled it.

Landmarks and Places in Georgetown

• Ward Hall, just outside the city, the summer home of Junius Ward, described as representing the height of Greek Revival architecture in Kentucky and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is now home to The Ward Hall Preservation Foundation.
• The Oxford Historic District, the historic district covering the business section, also listed on the National Register.

The Georgetown Economy

• Toyota built Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky here in the mid-1980s, described as Toyota's first wholly owned United States plant. It opened in 1988.
• The plant builds the Camry, the Lexus ES and the RAV4. The Avalon and the Sienna were formerly built there.
