About Independence, Kentucky
Landmarks and Places in Independence
- Simon Kenton High School, 11132 Madison Pike - built on a 23-acre Public Works Administration site deeded on 2 November 1935, half a mile south of the city centre, with 5.5 acres added shortly after so a lake could be dug on site to supply the school with water. Project cost is recorded as $175,606.85, it opened to 496 students, its mascot is the Pioneers and its colours blue and white.
- The Independence mural - depicts the Kenton County Courthouse together with Simon Kenton High School.
The Independence Economy
- Five major employers are named and no others: Balluff, Cengage Learning, Krauss Maffei, Mazak and Rotek. The Mazak entry is looser: its reference is a 2015 news story whose headline reads 'Mazak expands, renovates in Elsmere', naming the neighboring city rather than this one. Two further references, a regional 200-company list and an archived city business directory, back the group as a whole.
Community Life in Independence
- Independence is served by a branch of the Kenton County Public Library. The library's own page identifies the branch as the William E. Durr Branch. Schooling carries more weight than any arts listing. Eight schools are named inside the city, from Beechgrove, Kenton and Whites Tower elementaries through Twenhofel Middle and Summit View Academy to Simon Kenton High School, with Community Christian Academy and St. Cecilia Catholic School privately run, and a footnote records that part of the community is districted instead to Woodland Middle School and Scott High School.
