About Catonsville, Baltimore County

Catonsville is a census-designated place in Baltimore County, Maryland, on the western edge of Baltimore along Frederick Road, the old National Road. Founded around 1810 and named for English merchant Richard Caton, son-in-law of Declaration signer Charles Carroll of Carrollton, it grew as a streetcar suburb. In 2002 the state officially designated it "Music City, Maryland."

History of Catonsville

• The area was first settled around 1720 near a roadside inn known as Johnnycake, a name said to come from the cornbread served to travelers along Frederick Road.
• The community was named for Richard Caton, an English merchant who married Mary 'Polly' Carroll, daughter of Charles Carroll of Carrollton; first called 'Catonville,' the spelling changed to 'Catonsville' in the 1830s.
• On May 17, 1968, the Catonsville Nine, including brothers Daniel and Philip Berrigan, removed 378 draft files from the local Selective Service office and burned them with homemade napalm in the parking lot, a landmark Vietnam War protest.
