In the 1890s a real estate syndicate led by Francis G. Newlands bought more than 1,700 acres and began building a streetcar suburb called Chevy Chase.
Sections 1, 1a and 2 of the Chevy Chase Land Company's subdivisions became the Village of Chevy Chase.
Residents gained state approval as a special taxing area in 1914, and the village was incorporated in 1951.
It borders the Chevy Chase neighborhood of Washington, D.C., to the southeast.
