About Columbia, Howard County
Columbia is an unincorporated planned community in Howard County, Maryland, between Baltimore and Washington, D.C. Developer James W. Rouse quietly assembled the land beginning in 1962, and the community opened in 1967, organized into ten self-contained villages subdivided into neighborhoods. It has no municipal government; the nonprofit Columbia Association manages its parks, pools, and shared amenities.
History of Columbia
- Developer James W. Rouse began secretly buying Howard County farmland in 1962 through multiple front purchasers, assembling roughly 14,000 acres without triggering land-price speculation.
- Columbia officially opened in 1967 and was planned by a 'Work Group' of planners and social scientists around a structure of ten villages, each divided into neighborhoods with its own village center; the villages were completed between 1967 and 1990.
- Rouse conceived Columbia as a racially and religiously integrated community, an explicit rejection of the segregation common in 1960s American suburbs.
The Columbia Economy
- Cybersecurity firm Tenable Holdings is headquartered at 6100 Merriweather Drive in Columbia's Merriweather District of Downtown Columbia.
- Major area employers include the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, Verizon, and Leidos.
