About Amasa, Michigan
History of Amasa
- Matthew Gibson and his son J. Thoburn Gibson found iron croppings along the shores of the Hemlock River in 1888.
- The Hemlock River Mining Company took over the area two years later, once sufficient iron had been found, and platted the community in 1890.
- The place was called Hemlock at first. It was renamed for Amasa Stone, father-in-law of Col. Henry S. Pickands, on a suggestion from the Pickands Mather Group.

- Amasa Historic Business District, in the 100, 200 and 300 blocks of Pine Street, listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 22, 1983, reference number 83003660. Its buildings date mainly from 1890 to 1920 and include the township hall, a railroad depot, a church, four bars, a senior citizens' center, a lumber company office, three commercial buildings and one single-family house.
- Joseph Bowers House, 318 Hemlock Avenue, listed December 22, 1983, reference number 83003665. Built in 1901, clapboard-sided with a gable roof, and recorded as a well-preserved example of the miners' housing of its day.
- Jacob Jacobson House, 327 Maple Avenue, listed December 22, 1983, reference number 83003720. Apparently built in 1902 by carpenter Jacob Jacobson as his own home, a one-and-a-half-story frame house with a full-length hipped-roof porch on squared and turned columns.
The Amasa Economy
- Iron brought the community into being: the Hemlock River Mining Company platted it after the 1888 iron discovery on the Hemlock River.
- The National Register description of the Amasa Historic Business District states that growth in Amasa halted after the local mines closed, and that the district remains as it was in the early twentieth century.
