About Atlas, Michigan

Atlas is the historic crossroads hamlet at Gale and Perry Roads in Genesee County, sitting on the shore of a 51-acre millpond where a sawmill and a gristmill once ran on Kearsley Creek. The surrounding township is rolling farm and woodland country, 58 percent of it still agricultural or open, wrapped around the village of Goodrich about ten miles southeast of Flint. It is best known regionally for one thing no other American school can claim: the local high school teams are the Martians.

History of Atlas

• Settlement began in 1831 when Norman Davison founded Davisonville on Kearsley Creek. A sawmill was built there in 1833 and a gristmill in 1836.
• Brothers Moses and Enos Goodrich bought more than 1,000 acres in September 1835 at $1.25 an acre, drawn by fertile soil, heavy timber and available water. John Goodrich's family arrived on May 20, 1836, and a wood-frame house was built for him in 1838.
• The township was organized in 1836 as part of Lapeer County and was detached and added to Genesee County in 1843.

Landmarks and Places in Atlas

• Atlas Millpond, 51 acres, with the historic hamlet of Atlas gathered along its shore at Gale and Perry Roads. The district still contains buildings on sites formerly used as a saw mill and a grist mill.
• Shinanguag Lake, 238 acres, the largest lake in the township. Others include Gale Lake (15 acres), Seeley Lake (13 acres), Cummings Lake (6 acres) and Kuhn Lake (2 acres).
• Kearsley Creek, the waterway Davisonville was founded on, which also marks the township's lowest elevation at 810 feet.

The Atlas Economy

• The three largest industries employing township residents in 2020 were educational, health and social services at 24.7 percent, manufacturing at 20.7 percent, and construction at 9.0 percent.
• Vacant, agricultural and right-of-way land is still the largest single land use at 12,445.77 acres, or 57.8 percent of the township. Typical crops are corn, beans, wheat and alfalfa, alongside pasture and horse farms with paddocks.
• Woodlands, mostly second and third growth, cover roughly 4,670 acres or 22 percent of the township.

Community Life in Atlas

• The Good Times in Goodrich Festival is the township's main event, held annually on the first weekend in August and billed on its own materials as 'the biggest small festival that nobody's heard of.'
• The festival is run by Goodrich Festivals & Events, a nonprofit that puts the proceeds into help for local families, student scholarships, school booster groups and village beautification.
• The festival car show on Clarence Street opens with the National Anthem and a Blessing of the Vehicles at 10 a.m., with Hegel Road closed from the high school to downtown while entries roll in.
