About Au Sable, Michigan
The Charter Township of AuSable in Iosco County takes its shape from three natural features: the Au Sable River, the Lake Huron shore and the Huron National Forest.
History of Au Sable
- In 1823 fur trader Louis Chevalier opened a trading post about half a mile up the Au Sable River, on more than 600 acres granted by the federal government.
- During the logging years as many as eight lumber mills worked the river mouth, some sawing day and night.
- The 1890 census counted 4,828 people in AuSable City, which had incorporated as a village in 1872 and as a city in 1889. The city gave up its charter in 1931 and was folded into the township.
- On July 11, 1911, a forest fire swept into AuSable and Oscoda and destroyed about six hundred homes, along with mills, factories and docks.
