About Big Rapids, Michigan
Big Rapids is the Mecosta County seat, a college town wrapped around a bend of the Muskegon River in west-central Michigan, roughly 56 miles north of Grand Rapids. Ferris State University anchors the town's identity and economy, and in summer the river fills with tubers floating past the downtown Riverwalk. It is a place shaped by lumber-era settlers, a suffragist's frontier childhood, and a self-made educator who became Michigan's governor.
History of Big Rapids
- Settled in 1855 by brothers George and Zera French; the settlement was originally called Leonard.
- Became the seat of Mecosta County on February 11, 1859; the post office was renamed Big Rapids on September 29, 1859.
- Woodbridge N. Ferris settled in Big Rapids in 1884 and founded the Ferris Industrial School (now Ferris State University); Ferris later served as the 28th Governor of Michigan and as a U.S. Senator.
