About Cadillac, Michigan
Cadillac sits on a narrow strip of land between Lake Cadillac and Lake Mitchell in Wexford County, a four-season outdoor town that is the second-largest city in Northern Michigan after Traverse City. Born as a lumber and railroad town called Clam Lake, it is famous for the frozen-lake canal that behaves backwards, a bear that ate ice cream cones, and the 1975 night KISS played the high school gym. Snowmobilers, boaters, skiers and anglers cycle through its two big lakes all year.
History of Cadillac
- Settled in 1871, platted in 1872, and incorporated as a city in 1877; it was originally called Clam Lake.
- Renamed Cadillac after Antoine Laumet de La Mothe, sieur de Cadillac, the French colonist who founded Detroit in 1701.
- Founded by banker and railroad entrepreneur George A. Mitchell and carpenter Adam Gallinger.
