About Center Line, Michigan
Center Line is a small, densely built inner-ring Detroit suburb in Macomb County that is a true enclave, completely surrounded by the much larger city of Warren. Its French name comes from being the middle of three old Native American trails running north from Fort Detroit, and its Catholic-immigrant roots still show in landmarks like St. Clement Church. The city's motto captures its identity: 'Out of the past into the future.'
History of Center Line
- Land was swamp and wilderness until French, German, Belgian, and Irish immigrants cleared forests and drained the swamps in the early 19th century; earliest settlers arrived around 1837.
- The French reportedly named it 'Center Line' because it sat on the middle of three Native American (Potawatomi) trails from Fort Detroit to northern trading posts; the center trail ran from Detroit toward Utica.
- Historian Wesley Arnold traces the name to the Moravian Trail, forged by Native Americans who survived the 1782 Moravian massacre in Ohio and resettled near present-day Mount Clemens; the trail once ran where Sherwood Avenue is today.
Landmarks and Places in Center Line
- St. Clement Catholic Church and its cemetery, both recognized by Michigan historical markers.

The Center Line Economy
- An inner-ring Detroit suburb whose economy is tied to the surrounding auto-industry region; it sits roughly two miles north of Detroit along the Van Dyke corridor.
- Neighbors the sprawling General Motors Global Technical Center in adjacent Warren, GM's primary design and engineering campus (opened 1956, designed by Eero Saarinen, 710 acres, more than 21,000 employees), a major regional economic anchor.
- Maintains its own municipal government, schools, and economic-development office despite being fully enclaved within Warren.
Community Life in Center Line
- The Center Line Independence Festival (launched 2016) celebrates both the city's municipal independence from Warren and American independence, with live bands, a carnival, arts and crafts, a beer tent, food vendors, and a fireworks display.
- Strong Catholic and Central/Eastern European immigrant heritage centered historically on St. Clement parish.
