About Charlevoix, Charlevoix County

History of Charlevoix

  • Named for Fr. Pierre Francois Xavier de Charlevoix, an 18th-century French Jesuit explorer who, by tradition, sheltered on nearby Fisherman's Island during a storm.
  • European-American fishermen settled the Pine River mouth in 1852; the 1853 'Battle of Pine River' was a clash between townspeople and Strangite Mormons from Beaver Island over jury duty.
  • The town plat was completed by John S. Dixon in 1866; Charlevoix County was organized in 1869 with Charlevoix as county seat.

Landmarks and Places in Charlevoix

  • Earl Young's 'mushroom houses,' 31 curved stone-and-boulder structures built over five decades; a local historic district protecting many of them was established in 2016.
  • The Charlevoix South Pier Light Station marking the channel from Lake Michigan into Round Lake.
  • The US-31 bascule drawbridge over the Pine River channel, which halts downtown traffic for passing boats.

The Charlevoix Economy

  • Tourism and resort/second-home business anchor the modern economy, drawing visitors to the harbor, beaches and boutique downtown.

Community Life in Charlevoix

  • The Venetian Festival, dating to 1930 when it began as a parade of candle-lit boats on Round Lake, is the signature summer event, now featuring a lighted boat parade, fireworks, free concerts, a carnival and street parades.
  • Downtown's annual petunia planting, begun in 1982, puts tens of thousands of petunias along the streets each Memorial Day week.
  • Ernest Hemingway spent boyhood summers in the area and set several Nick Adams stories on and near Lake Charlevoix.
