About Chesterfield, Macomb County
Chesterfield Township spreads across 30.6 square miles of eastern Macomb County, running from the Gratiot Avenue and I-94 commercial corridor down to a shoreline of docks, marinas and shallow Anchor Bay water. French traders boiled salt from its springs and called the place La Saline long before the Michigan Legislature created the township in 1842 and named it for an English lord. About 45,376 people now live in nine unincorporated communities with not one incorporated village among them, held together by the Anchor Bay name that its chamber, its schools and its subdivisions all share.
History of Chesterfield
- French explorers and missionaries reached the area as early as 1611 and named Lake St. Clair on August 12, 1687. French settlers established La Saline, known today as the Salt River, harvesting salt from local springs as a trade commodity, and they laid out the strip farms typical of French agriculture.
- Two of the last Native American reserves in southeastern Michigan sat in Chesterfield, with the Swan Creek people among the last to leave. Arrowheads, clay pots and burial plots have been found in the township.
- William Wampler surveyed Chesterfield in 1818, and under American rule the Fort Gratiot Turnpike became the main route through the area.
