About Chesterfield, Macomb County

Chesterfield Township spreads across 30.6 square miles of eastern Macomb County, running from the Gratiot Avenue and I-94 commercial corridor down to a shoreline of docks, marinas and shallow Anchor Bay water. French traders boiled salt from its springs and called the place La Saline long before the Michigan Legislature created the township in 1842 and named it for an English lord. About 45,376 people now live in nine unincorporated communities with not one incorporated village among them, held together by the Anchor Bay name that its chamber, its schools and its subdivisions all share.

History of Chesterfield

  • French explorers and missionaries reached the area as early as 1611 and named Lake St. Clair on August 12, 1687. French settlers established La Saline, known today as the Salt River, harvesting salt from local springs as a trade commodity, and they laid out the strip farms typical of French agriculture.
  • Two of the last Native American reserves in southeastern Michigan sat in Chesterfield, with the Swan Creek people among the last to leave. Arrowheads, clay pots and burial plots have been found in the township.
  • William Wampler surveyed Chesterfield in 1818, and under American rule the Fort Gratiot Turnpike became the main route through the area.

Landmarks and Places in Chesterfield

  • Brandenburg Park, 50050 Jefferson Avenue, with a 530-foot fishing pier, boat launches, a soft-shore kayak launch, an inclusive playground and swings, splash pad, sand volleyball, pickleball, basketball and tennis courts, paved paths and five rentable structures.
  • Chesterfield Township Historical Village at 47275 Sugarbush, holding the Weller one-room schoolhouse (moved from 22 Mile and Gratiot in 1996 and donated by the Odrobina family), a log cabin, cobbler's shop, blacksmith shop and outhouses added in 2006, and the Kolping Chapel added in 2016.
  • Anchor Bay, the northern arm of Lake St. Clair, over 90 square miles in area and roughly 9 miles north to south by 10 miles east to west.

The Chesterfield Economy

  • Gratiot Avenue (M-3) and the Interstate 94 corridor form the township's commercial spine, with the historic Chesterfield community sitting on M-3 between 22 Mile and 23 Mile roads.
  • Anchor Bay drives a waterfront economy in the southeast, where many pleasure boats, docks and marine-related businesses are found.
  • Anchor Bay School District is a major local employer, teaching 5,334 students across 11 facilities in 2024-25 on a 2022-23 budget of $87.68 million, and serving New Baltimore plus parts of Casco, Chesterfield, Ira and Lenox townships.

Community Life in Chesterfield

  • Cheers to Chesterfield is the township's signature festival, scheduled for August 28 and 29, 2026 on the parks department calendar.
  • Sprint and Splash, a run, walk and kayak event, holds its 14th annual edition at Brandenburg Park on Sunday, September 20, 2026.
  • Fishing and boating define summer here. Anchor Bay game fish include bass, bluegill, catfish, northern pike, perch, salmon, steelhead, sturgeon, trout and walleye, and yacht and sail clubs including the Albatross Yacht Club, North Star Sail Club and Clinton River Boat Club operate on the bay.
