About Clinton Township, Michigan
Clinton Township is Michigan's largest township by population, with 100,513 residents in 2020 packed into 28 square miles of Macomb County about 22 miles northeast of downtown Detroit. It wraps around three sides of Mount Clemens, the county seat, and its history runs from a 1782 Moravian mission on the Clinton River to a Hall Road retail corridor anchored by an open-air mall that lets you bring the dog. Eminem and the late J Dilla both called it home, which is not the resume most suburbs carry.
History of Clinton Township
- The first recorded settlement was New Gnadenhutten, founded July 22, 1782 by Moravian missionary David Zeisberger and his followers on what was then called the Huron River. Zeisberger was born in Moravia in 1721 and emigrated to North America in the late 1730s.
- The mission had 29 cabins and a chapel. Residents farmed, practiced trades, attended school and held religious services.
- Food shortages ran for three years and Chippewa resentment grew over shared hunting grounds. Major Arent DePeyster and merchant John Askins bought the settlement in March 1786, and the Moravians left on April 20, 1786. The Conner family stayed on as traders and interpreters.
