About Comstock Park, Kent County

Comstock Park is a community of 10,500 people packed into the southeast corner of Alpine Township and the southwest corner of Plainfield Township, just north of Grand Rapids beside the Grand River. It began as a sawmill settlement on Mill Creek in 1838, went through two names before landing on its third in 1906, and today it is best known as the home of the West Michigan Whitecaps and a ballpark burger that made national television. An F5 tornado came through here in 1956, and the community still keeps the old Mill Creek name alive in its summer festival.

History of Comstock Park

  • In 1838 Daniel North established a settlement here known as North's Mill.
  • The name changed to Mill Creek in 1848, and the village became a stop for two railroads.
  • The community was renamed Comstock Park in 1906 after Charles C. Comstock, who represented the district in the U.S. House of Representatives for one term from 1885 to 1887.

Landmarks and Places in Comstock Park

  • LMCU Ballpark, opened April 12, 1994. It was Old Kent Park until 2000, Fifth Third Ballpark from 2000 to 2021, and now carries Lake Michigan Credit Union's name, with roughly 8,942 fixed seats.
  • Dwight Lydell Park, a Kent County park on the site of a former fish hatchery, which unveiled new amenities in June 2025 and hosts Mill Creek Days.
  • Fred Meijer White Pine Trail State Park, a 92 mile rail trail from northern Grand Rapids to Cadillac that passes through the community. It follows the old Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad grade and was fully paved as of fall 2023.

The Comstock Park Economy

  • The West Michigan Whitecaps, the Detroit Tigers' Midwest League affiliate, are the community's marquee enterprise and its main draw for outside visitors.
  • Kent District Library's headquarters, the KDL Service Center, is at 814 West River Center Drive NE in Comstock Park. KDL runs 20 branches plus a bookmobile and circulates more than 8.2 million items a year.
  • Alpine Avenue is the community's heavy commercial corridor and its transit link. The Rapid runs Route 9 along it into central Grand Rapids.

Community Life in Comstock Park

  • Mill Creek Days is the annual community festival, named for the village's 1848 to 1906 name, and is held at Dwight Lydell Park. The 2024 edition included a Renaissance Faire.
  • The Fifth Third Burger, introduced at the ballpark in 2009, is a 4 pound, 4,800 calorie hamburger named for the 1.6666 pounds, or five thirds, of meat in it. Adam Richman finished one on the Travel Channel's Man v. Food.
  • The Whitecaps' mascots are Crash the River Rascal, Roxy the River Rascal and Franky the Swimming Pig.
