Dearborn Heights is a Wayne County bedroom suburb about 12 miles west of downtown Detroit, stitched together in 1960 from leftover pieces of Dearborn Township into an oddly shaped city split by neighboring Dearborn. Long shaped by the auto industry next door, it has become a center of metro Detroit's Arab American life, with roughly a quarter of residents of Arab descent and a thriving halal food and mosque culture. A rescued Donald Ross golf course on the Rouge River is one of its quiet crown jewels.

History of Dearborn Heights

• Incorporated from two discontinuous sections of Dearborn Township plus a quarter-mile connecting strip from the village of Inkster, with the founding election held June 20, 1960; remaining unannexed township land incorporated April 8, 1963.
