About Flint, Michigan
Flint is the Genesee County seat and the birthplace of General Motors, a onetime carriage-making powerhouse that became one of the great automobile factory towns of the 20th century. It was the stage for the 1936-37 sit-down strike that built the modern UAW, and later a symbol of Rust Belt decline and the 2014 water crisis, even as its Cultural Center and hometown champions like boxer Claressa Shields keep 'Vehicle City' pride alive.
History of Flint
- Established as a fur-trading post in 1819 by Jacob Smith and incorporated as a city in 1855.
- After a lumber boom, Flint became the world's largest-volume manufacturer of horse-drawn carriages and wagons, the origin of its 'Vehicle City' nickname.
- William Durant founded General Motors in Flint in 1908.
