About Grand Blanc Township, Michigan
Grand Blanc Township is a 32.7-square-mile doughnut wrapped around the small City of Grand Blanc just south of Flint, and at 39,846 residents it is Flint's largest suburb. Organized on March 9, 1833, it is the oldest unit of government in Genesee County, older than the county's cities and older than Michigan statehood itself. Its French name means "great white," left behind by fur traders who came through before 1800, and its most famous acre is the 17th green at Warwick Hills, where the PGA Tour spent half a century.
History of Grand Blanc Township
- The land was Chippewa territory. French fur traders arriving before 1800 gave it the name "Grand Blanc," meaning "great white." A competing local legend attributes the name to a large white trader named Fisher, who married into the local Native community and lived near Lake Copneconic.
- Jacob Stevens became the first settler in 1823, staking a claim along the Saginaw Trail after his original land claim near Detroit proved faulty. (Wikipedia's city article gives 1822; the township article and My City Magazine give 1823.)
- Grand Blanc families gathered at the home of Rufus Stevens to organize the Township of Grand Blanc in 1833, formally chartered by the Territory of Michigan on March 9. It was the first unit of government in what became Genesee County.
