About Gaylord, Michigan
Gaylord is the county seat and only city in Otsego County, a northern-Michigan resort town that reinvented itself in the 1960s as a Swiss-style 'Alpine Village,' dressing its Main Street storefronts in Tyrolean chalet facades. Sitting on the 45th parallel roughly 1,350 feet up in the snowbelt, it draws visitors for skiing, golf, snowmobiling and its trademark summer festival, Alpenfest. The city even keeps its own free-roaming elk herd on public viewing grounds.
History of Gaylord
- Settled around 1873 when railroads pushed north from Otsego Lake Village; first called 'Barnes' after Michigan Central Railroad secretary Orlando Barnes.
- Renamed 'Village of Gaylord' in 1874 in honor of Augustine Smith Gaylord, an attorney tied to the Jackson, Lansing & Saginaw Railroad.
- Became county seat of Otsego County in 1877; incorporated as a village in 1881 and as a city in 1922 (by a 114-93 vote).
Landmarks and Places in Gaylord
- Downtown Alpine-style Main Street with Tyrolean chalet storefronts.
- Elk View Park off Grandview, where the city's herd of about 70 elk can be viewed from public pull-offs near the Elks Lodge.
- Pigeon River Country State Forest, northeast of town, home to the largest free-roaming elk herd east of the Mississippi River.
The Gaylord Economy
- Balanced base of tourism, recreation, agriculture, oil and natural gas, manufacturing, warehouse distribution, retail and government services.
- One of the largest concentrations of ski and golf resorts in the Midwest, fueled by roughly 140 inches of average annual snowfall.
- Historic industry included the Dayton Last Block Works (1895-1931), which turned local hardwoods into shoe forms, bowling pins and golf-club heads.
Community Life in Gaylord
- Alpenfest, held the third week of July since 1965, is a Swiss-themed celebration featuring a yodeling contest, Swiss stone spitting, ankle and knee contests, and lampion (lantern) making.
- The festival's 'Die Groeste Kaffeepause' (World's Largest Coffee Break) serves free coffee, donuts and milk under the pavilion with the Gaylord Alpine Band; in 1983 organizers sought a Guinness record but were told no category existed.
- Downtown carries a Bavarian/Alpine aesthetic, and the Otsego County area leans into outdoor recreation culture year-round.
