About Genesee Township, Michigan

History of Genesee Township

  • Grand Blanc Township, organised on 9 March 1833, covered several survey township areas including what is now Genesee. The earliest settlers, Luman Beach and Addison Stewart, arrived in 1833 near Geneseeville. In September 1835 Sherman Stanley came from Mount Morris, New York and started the Stanley settlement where sections 8, 9, 16 and 17 meet, now the intersection of Bray and Stanley Roads, and several more families from that same city joined him by 1838. A lumber mill and dam were built on Kearsley Creek in 1834, 1,650 feet from the Flint River, followed by second and third mills there in 1836 and 1837. A fourth mill went up on the Flint River at Geneseeville on the west side of section 11, built by Lot Clark and Stephen Warren, who also held a charter to build its dam; later owners added a companion grist mill in 1847. The township's organisational meeting was held at the Cold Water settlement on 2 April 1838, and as organised it included the eastern half of what became Mount Morris Township. Kearsley Township was formed on 19 April 1839 from several of its sections, and the legislature merged Kearsley back into Flint Township on 7 March 1843, with its northern half absorbed by Genesee at some later point the article does not date. The western third was split off in 1955 to form Mount Morris Township. Geneseeville was platted by Ruben McCury and Simon King in 1858.

Landmarks and Places in Genesee Township

  • The Everett A. Cummings Center is an indoor and outdoor convention centre and fairgrounds built in 1968 as the permanent home of the Genesee County Fair, which has been held there every year since. The complex includes a 30,000-square-foot arena seating 3,000 in bleachers and a 96-by-300-foot exhibit building of 28,800 square feet, plus an outdoor grandstand and an indoor arena, and it forms part of the Genesee County Parks and Recreation system; besides the fair it hosts equestrian and athletic events and trade shows. The main watercourses are the Flint River, Kearsley Creek and Butternut Creek, with Stanley Creek and Bray Brook as lesser streams. The article also records that Native Americans had no settlement in the area but established a graveyard in the northwest corner of section 11, which was found when the railroad came through.

The Genesee Township Economy

  • The article names no present-day employers, so none is asserted. Its documented economic history is milling: four water-powered mills on Kearsley Creek and the Flint River between 1834 and 1837, and a grist mill added in 1847. Interstate 475 runs north and south through the southwestern part of the township and M-54, the Dort Highway, runs north and south through the western part. The township draws water from the Karegnondi Water Authority pipeline treated by the Genesee County Drain Commission Water and Waste Division, supply having begun on 27 November 2017.

Community Life in Genesee Township

  • Educational services come primarily from Genesee School District, Kearsley Community Schools and Mount Morris Consolidated Schools, with small parts of the township served by Beecher Community School District. The township lies within the Genesee District Library. The unincorporated community of Genesee, which has its own school district and a post office under ZIP code 48437, is best known as the home of Crossroads Village and the Huckleberry Railroad. Cold Water, an unincorporated community founded in 1833 by teetotalers, held the township's first school, formed in 1835.
