About Hamburg, Michigan
Hamburg Township is 36 square miles of Livingston County with 32 named lakes packed inside it, a place that has been selling summer since railroad crews reached the Huron River chain in the 1880s. It got its name from a deadlocked 8-to-8 vote broken by three German-born mill owners who had been barred from voting in the first place, then named the town after the city they were born in. Zukey Lake Tavern has poured drinks on the north shore since 1933, the old Grand Trunk right-of-way is now a paved trail, and the township quietly outpopulates every city in its county.
History of Hamburg
- Hamburg Township was officially organized on March 26, 1835, two years before Michigan became a state. A state historical marker calls it the oldest incorporated community on the Mike Levine Lakelands Trail State Park.
- E.F. Gay, a merchant from Ann Arbor, bought 30 acres and built a dam and sawmill along Horseshoe Creek, a 15-mile tributary of the Huron River. He sold the operation in 1837 to three German immigrant brothers named Grisson, who added a grist mill, store and hotel. The plat was recorded in 1837.
- The naming was a fight. Nineteen men deadlocked eight to eight (the state marker names Lenox and Steuben as the rival choices; Wikipedia records Steuben and Knox). The three German owners had been excluded from voting, were then allowed to decide, and chose Hamburg after their birth city in Germany.
Landmarks and Places in Hamburg
- Mike Levine Lakelands Trail State Park, with about 10 paved miles running east from M-36 through Hamburg Township, the most developed stretch of the roughly 32-mile trail
- Zukey Lake Tavern, north shore of Zukey Lake, on Zukey Lake Tavern Drive
- The Huron River Chain of Lakes: Big Portage (680 acres, 84 feet deep), Little Portage, Base Line, Whitewood, Gallagher, Strawberry (257 acres, 64 feet deep), Zukey, Ore and Tamarack
The Hamburg Economy
- Hamburg is fundamentally a lake and residential community, and at 21,259 residents in the 2020 census it is the most populated municipality in Livingston County, ahead of the county's cities.
- Affluent by county standards: the 2000 census recorded a median household income of $75,960 and a poverty rate of 2.4 percent.
- Recreation and lake tourism are the enduring industries. Thirty-two named lakes, 3.8 square miles of water, marinas, boat launches, resorts and lakeside taverns have drawn visitors since the 1880s rail era.
Community Life in Hamburg
- Zukey Lake Tavern, on the north shore of Zukey Lake, has operated as a tavern since 1933 in a building put up around 1920 and is the township's best-known gathering place.

- The Hamburg Township Historical Museum at 7225 Stone Street opens Saturdays 10am to 2pm inside a building erected in 1865 as a Methodist worship space.
