About Harris, Michigan
Harris Township covers 143.3 square miles in northeastern Menominee County in the Upper Peninsula, running about 24 miles north to south, and had 2,113 residents at the 2020 census, up 7.4 percent from 2010. It contains most of the Hannahville Indian Community reservation and the tribe's Island Resort and Casino on US-2 and US-41, which makes the township a regional destination well out of proportion to its population. It is by far the most economically documented of the small places in this group.
History of Harris
- A post office named DeLoughary was established on July 8, 1880, with farmer George W. DeLoughary as first postmaster. It was renamed Harris on September 6, 1900 for Michael B. Harris, a lumberman who settled in 1875 and served as a state legislator.
- Menasippe Perron built a dam and a sawmill at Perronville in 1883.
- Railroads reached the area in 1873 and hauled ore and timber.
