Hemlock is an unincorporated community in Richland Township, Saginaw County, Michigan, and is also a census-designated place used for statistics with no legal standing as an incorporated municipality. The 2020 census counted 1,408 residents. The CDP occupies the south central part of Richland Township along M-46, at an elevation of 650 feet, and its postal reach is much wider than its boundary: the Hemlock post office, ZIP 48626, serves nearly all of Richland Township plus parts of Fremont, Thomas and Swan Creek townships and part of Ingersoll Township over in Midland County. The name on the map is also the name of a global polysilicon producer headquartered here.

History of Hemlock

• The community was first settled in 1865.
• A post office was established in 1869 under the name Hemlock City, and the name was shortened to Hemlock in 1895.
• The Hemlock Public School District dates to 1863 and is run by a seven-member elected board. Its current high school opened in January 1959, the middle school was built in 1970, and Ling Elementary, built in 1975, is named for Dr. Kenneth Ling, a physician and long-serving board member who died in 1972.

• It was founded in 1961 and is owned by Corning Inc. with 80.5 percent and Shin-Etsu Chemical with 19.5 percent.
• In January 2025 the U.S. Department of Commerce announced a $325 million award under the CHIPS and Science Act to Hemlock Semiconductor toward a new polysilicon crystal factory in Hemlock.
• In 2019 the company contributed to construction of the Hemlock Area STEM Center, which serves kindergarten through high school students of the region.

Community Life in Hemlock

• Sawdust Days is the annual festival, held in September. It began in the late 1970s after the local hardware store ran a chainsaw promotion and demonstration on the third Saturday of September.
• WCEN-FM 94.5, known as The Moose, is a country station that has been licensed in Hemlock since 2001. It first went on the air in 1959 licensed to Mount Pleasant.
• Andrew Wylie, an NFL offensive lineman, was born in Hemlock in 1994.
