About Houghton, Michigan
Houghton sits on Portage Lake in the Keweenaw Peninsula, a former copper-mining boomtown reborn as a college town around Michigan Technological University. It is one of the snowiest places in the Midwest, claims the birthplace of American professional hockey, and hosts a legendary month-long snow-statue Winter Carnival. The world's heaviest double-decked vertical-lift bridge links it across the water to Hancock.
History of Houghton
- Named for Douglass Houghton, Michigan's first state geologist, whose 1841 report on Keweenaw copper helped trigger the first great U.S. mining boom
- Platted in 1854 by Ernest F. Pletschke and incorporated as a village in 1861, becoming a full city in 1970
