About Hubbell, Michigan

Hubbell is a census-designated place and unincorporated community in Houghton County, Michigan, strung along the west shore of Torch Lake on M-26 about two miles southwest of the village of Lake Linden. It has no government of its own and its ground is split between two civil townships, Torch Lake and Osceola. The census recorded 908 residents in 2020, after 946 in 2010 and 1,105 in 2000, a steady three-decade decline. The CDP is compact at 1.88 square miles, of which 1.87 is land and 0.01 water. Published identifiers: elevation 627 feet, ZIP 49934, area code 906, FIPS 26-39680, GNIS 0628746, coordinates 47 degrees 10 minutes 24 seconds north by 88 degrees 25 minutes 45 seconds west. The name honors Jay Abel Hubbell, who represented this part of Michigan in Congress. Although it is not a village, Hubbell functions as the population center of Torch Lake Township and hosts the township hall on Duncan Avenue.

History of Hubbell

  • The community carries a congressman's name and a copper district's shape. Jay Abel Hubbell, born 1829 in Avon, now Rochester Hills, graduated from the University of Michigan in 1853, was admitted to the bar in 1855, and served as prosecuting attorney of Houghton County from 1861 to 1867 before going to the U.S. House as a Republican, becoming the first member to represent Michigan's ninth congressional district. He was the figure most responsible for persuading the legislature to establish a school of mines at Houghton for training mining engineers, and he donated land for its first buildings in 1885; that school grew into Michigan Technological University. Torch Lake Township, of which Hubbell is the main settlement, was organized in 1886 and is one of the county's largest by area. The wider setting is the copper milling belt: the village of Lake Linden, at the north end of Torch Lake and two miles up the shore, was once the site of the largest copper milling operation in North America. Neither the Hubbell article nor the township article publishes a founding date, plat or post office record for Hubbell itself.

Landmarks and Places in Hubbell

  • {'name': 'Ernie Poisson Memorial Park', 'kind': 'park', 'note': 'About 7.3 acres in Hubbell, with a boat launch, docks, a beach area, picnic tables, a pavilion, portable toilets and swings.', 'source': 'https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torch_Lake_Township,_Houghton_County,_Michigan'}
  • {'name': 'Torch Lake Township Hall', 'kind': 'civic building', 'note': "On Duncan Avenue in Hubbell; the community is the township's major population center although it holds no legal authority of its own.", 'source': 'https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torch_Lake_Township,_Houghton_County,_Michigan'}
  • {'name': 'Torch Lake', 'kind': 'lake', 'note': 'Fed by the Traprock River and lying mostly in Torch Lake Township with portions in Osceola and Schoolcraft. About six miles long and one and a half miles wide, with a maximum depth of 120 feet, draining south into Torch Bay and on to Portage Lake.', 'source': 'https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torch_Lake_(Houghton_County,_Michigan)'}

The Hubbell Economy

  • No current employer, payroll or business figure is published for Hubbell in any article consulted, and the articles give no present-day industry for the community. What the record does establish is the historical frame. This is the Copper Country, and the stamp-milling operation centered on Lake Linden at the head of Torch Lake was the largest of its kind on the continent. Hubbell sits inside a chain of small settlements along M-26 built by that industry, with Chickenville between Lake Linden and Hubbell and Mellonsville between Hubbell and Tamarack City. The township notes that Hubbell is its major population center and the location of the township hall, so the community serves as the local administrative point without holding any legal authority itself. Schooling is provided through the Lake Linden-Hubbell district, which also owns a 400-acre forest lot used for recreation.

Community Life in Hubbell

  • The ancestry profile is the clearest cultural signal the sources publish, and it reads as a Copper Country mining community: at the 2000 census 23.7 percent of residents claimed Finnish ancestry, 18.4 percent French, 11.9 percent German, 10.9 percent French Canadian, 8.9 percent English and 6.9 percent Italian. The Finnish plurality is characteristic of the Keweenaw copper districts. Recreation is outdoor and local. The Lake Linden-Hubbell Forest, a 400-acre lot on Bootjack Road owned by the school district, carries hiking and cross-country skiing trails, a grid of geocache sites, a fire pit expanse, an archery range and a log cabin. In the community itself the Ernie Poisson Memorial Park runs to about 7.3 acres beside the water. The climate is humid continental, Koppen Dfb, with warm and often humid summers and cold winters carrying large amounts of snowfall.
