About Ira, Michigan
History of Ira
- The township was created in 1837 and named for Ira Marks, an early settler. A post office named Ira operated on the north shore of Lake St. Clair from May 1851 to June 1853.
- Fair Haven began as a French-speaking Metis settlement dating from before 1837 on the Riviere des Cygnes, which American settlers translated as Swan Creek. Its post office opened as Swan Creek in October 1857 and was renamed Fair Haven in February 1862.
- Anchorville started as the Swan Creek Settlement. Rev. Charles Chambille arrived in 1853 to serve the French-speaking families, and the church he dedicated in 1854 became the nucleus of a village. It was renamed in 1876 to describe its position on Anchor Bay, and its post office was established in December 1885.
