About Iron Mountain, Michigan
Iron Mountain is the seat of Dickinson County in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, born from one of the world's richest iron ore strikes on the Menominee Range. Cornish and Italian immigrant miners built a culture of pasties, bocce, and deep-mine engineering marvels, while Henry Ford's nearby Kingsford plant turned wood scrap into the charcoal briquettes still sold today. Now a tourism and outdoor-recreation hub, it is famous for one of the world's largest ski jumps and an abandoned mine that shelters tens of thousands of bats.
History of Iron Mountain
- Dickinson County was organized in 1891 from parts of Marquette, Menominee, and Iron counties, and named for Donald M. Dickinson, U.S. Postmaster General.
- The iron boom followed 1870s discoveries on the Menominee Range, including John Lane Buell's 1873 exposure of one of the world's richest ore deposits.
- Iron Mountain was settled in 1878 and incorporated as a city in 1889, taking its name from the local iron ore.
Landmarks and Places in Iron Mountain
- The Cornish Pumping Engine (54 feet tall with a 40-foot flywheel) and Mining Museum, built in the early 1900s to pump water from the deep Chapin Mine.
- Pine Mountain Ski Jump, begun in 1937, among the largest artificial ski jumps in the world.
- Millie Hill bat cave, an abandoned 1860s iron mine that is now one of the largest bat hibernacula in the Midwest, hosting roughly 25,000 to 50,000 bats.
The Iron Mountain Economy
- Iron ore mining on the Menominee Range, led by the Chapin Mine, was the founding industry.
- Ford's wood-waste operations spawned Kingsford Charcoal, which still uses over a million tons of reclaimed wood annually.
- During World War II, Ford's Kingsford plant built CG-4A wooden military gliders.
Community Life in Iron Mountain
- Strong Italian heritage (about 20.6% Italian ancestry in 2000), alongside German, Swedish, English, and Cornish roots, expressed through pasties, bocce ball tournaments, and Italian cuisine.
- Cornish immigrants brought the pasty, a hearty meat-and-vegetable pastry that miners carried underground and warmed on a shovel over candle flame.
- Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo and former NFL head coach Steve Mariucci both grew up here and were boyhood best friends and teammates at Iron Mountain High School.
