About Isabella, Michigan
Isabella Township is a civil township in Isabella County, Michigan, with 2,096 residents at the 2020 census across about 36.3 square miles. Its one concentrated settlement is the village of Rosebush, which is administered by the township and had 353 residents in 2020. The township's southern portions are served by Mount Pleasant addresses, and US Route 127 runs along the eastern edge.
History of Isabella
- Settlement at what became Rosebush began in 1844, when Cornelius Bogan opened a general store and called the place 'Halfway' because it sat midway between Clare and Mount Pleasant.
- The name Rosebush comes from a land barter. Resident James Bush traded some of his property to the railroad in exchange for the right to have the station named after his wife, Rose. Wikipedia dates the railroad's arrival to 1868 and identifies it as the Ann Arbor Railroad.
- The post office history is unusually unstable. It was established as Calkinsville on July 9, 1873, became Rosebush in 1889, reverted to Calkinsville in 1890, and returned to Rosebush permanently on February 19, 1903.
