About Kalamo, Michigan
Kalamo Township is a farming township on the western edge of Eaton County, bordering Barry County, with 1,765 residents at the 2020 census. It has no incorporated place and no village government. Kalamo and Carlisle are small crossroads settlements and Elmira is a historic locale. A railroad was graded through Kalamo village in the 1870s but never completed.
History of Kalamo
- The boundary lines were surveyed in 1825 and 1826 by John Mullett and the subdivisions in 1826 by Musgrove Evans.
- Organized by an act of the legislature approved March 15, 1838, which set town 2 north of ranges 5 and 6 west off 'into a separate township by the name of Kalamo' and ordered the first township meeting at the house of Alonzo Stebbins.
- The first township election was held in April 1838. P. A. Stebbins was elected supervisor, Theodore T. Stebbins clerk and John Davis treasurer.

- Lacey Lake, the mill pond earlier known as Hyde's Lake, whose outlet is a branch of the Thornapple River.
The Kalamo Economy
- Farming. The 1880 Eaton County history judged Kalamo 'among the best in the county for agricultural purposes,' with high rolling land in the north and east and extensive plains in the centre and south.
- Water-powered milling at Carlisle on a branch of the Thornapple River, which is the outlet of Hyde's Lake, also called Lacey's Lake. Hiram and Reuben Gridley built a grist mill before 1856; it and an earlier Gridley sawmill were later moved to Vermontville.
- By 1880 Kalamo village had two stores, a sawmill, a post office, a hotel, a tin shop and a shoe shop. Carlisle had one store, a post office, a blacksmith shop, a wagon shop and a furniture factory standing on the old sawmill site, plus a small grist mill and sawmill on the stream below.
Community Life in Kalamo
- The first schoolhouse in the township was built at Carlisle, with William Fuller the first teacher. The township school inspectors' report for the year ending September 1, 1879 recorded 11 districts, 528 school children, 416 in attendance, 11 schoolhouses (one brick, ten frame) and 23 teachers.
- The Congregational Church at Kalamo was organized about 1867 by Rev. O. H. Spoor. Its brick church was built in 1868 or 1869 and stands in the southern part of the village.
- The Methodist Episcopal Church at Kalamo dedicated a brick church on June 3, 1868. The building measures 31 by 47 feet inside the walls, cost $4,070, and its outside tower is twelve feet square and eighty feet high, with a 1,000-pound bell. It stands in the northern part of the village.
