About Lansing Township, Michigan
History of Lansing Township
- Jacob F. Cooley was the first white settler to purchase land in the township, in 1837, and the township was organized in 1842 in the northwest corner of Ingham County. Its name did not come from anything local: the article states it was named after Lansing, New York, the hometown of one of the township's original settlers. Its territory began shrinking almost immediately in municipal terms, with the first loss in 1859 when the unincorporated settlement of Lansing incorporated as a city out of seven square miles near the center of the township. Annexation by Lansing and later East Lansing continued to take land until the original 36 square miles had been reduced to about 4.9 square miles in six disconnected pieces. On April 1, 1963 township voters chose charter township status, which the article says provides streamlined administration, expanded taxing authority and added protection from annexation. The census series traces the same story: from 823 in 1870 the population peaked at 17,627 in 1950, fell in every count through 8,126 in 2010, and rose slightly to 8,143 in 2020.
Landmarks and Places in Lansing Township
- Eastwood Towne Center - developed from 2002 as the township's downtown east of Wood Road, described in the article as one of the largest shopping malls in metropolitan Lansing.
- Edgemont Park - the census-designated place administered by the township, in its western section north of Saginaw Street (M-43).
- Adams Plating - a Superfund site in the western section of the township, listed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency.
The Lansing Township Economy
- The township's western section was traditionally its industrial core, holding the General Motors Lansing Craft Center and the neighboring Lansing Metal Center automobile factories, both of which closed in early 2006 and were demolished in 2008. The former Adams Plating site in that same section is a Superfund site. The former Waverly Golf Course and the adjacent Michigan Avenue Park were sold for commercial and residential redevelopment in 2018. The northeastern section is heavily industrialized west of Wood Road, while east of Wood Road the township has since 2002 built what the article calls its downtown around the Eastwood Towne Center, described as one of the largest shopping malls in metropolitan Lansing, and in May 2003 the township created a Downtown Development Authority to capture local property taxes for infrastructure in that district. Commercial development also lines Grand River Avenue, Michigan Avenue, Kalamazoo Street and both sides of US-127.
Community Life in Lansing Township
- Lansing Township operates under the Charter Township Act with a board of trustees holding legislative and executive powers, made up of an elected supervisor, clerk and treasurer plus four additional trustees. Its residential identity lives in named neighborhoods rather than villages: parts of Groesbeck lie north of Grand River Avenue and east of Wood Road, and part of Urbandale falls in the southern portion. Its schools are split between the Lansing Public School District and Waverly Community Schools. The southeastern section is zoned exclusively for agricultural development and holds Michigan State University research farms, including the Dairy Cattle Teaching and Research Center, the Horse Teaching and Research Center, the Entomology Field Research Lab and the Botany Field Research Lab.
