About Lansing, Michigan

History of Lansing

  • The area was settled in the 1830s and named after Lansing, New York, from which some early promoters had come.
  • In 1847 the state legislature chose the tiny, largely unsettled Township of Lansing as Michigan's capital, moving the seat of government inland from Detroit for security and central-location reasons.
  • Ransom E. Olds founded the Olds Motor Vehicle Company in 1897 and later REO Motor Car Company in 1905, making Lansing a major early auto-manufacturing center.
