About Mackinaw City, Michigan
Mackinaw City is a village at the northern tip of Michigan's Lower Peninsula, on the Straits of Mackinac, at the southern end of the Mackinac Bridge. Its Wikipedia lead describes it as divided between Cheboygan and Emmet counties: the downtown district and much of the development lie in Mackinaw Township, Cheboygan County, while the larger portion of the village by area is in Wawatam Township, Emmet County. The 2020 census counted 846 residents across 7.65 square miles, of which 3.44 is land and 4.21 is water, and the village's economy is dominated by tourism built on Fort Michilimackinac, two lighthouses, the bridge and its two ferry lines.
History of Mackinaw City
- The name Mackinaw is a respelling of Mackinac, the strait between Lake Huron and Lake Michigan, ultimately from Ojibwe mishinii-makinaang, 'at the place of many snapping turtles'. Historic tribes of the area included the Ojibwe, Ottawa and Potawatomi, collectively the Council of Three Fires.
- The first European to pass the site of Mackinaw City was Jean Nicolet, sent out from Quebec City by Samuel Champlain in 1633, and Father Jacques Marquette established a mission on Mackinac Island in 1671.
- Mackinaw City's first European settlement came in 1715 when the French built Fort Michilimackinac.
