About Mackinaw City, Michigan

Mackinaw City is a village at the northern tip of Michigan's Lower Peninsula, on the Straits of Mackinac, at the southern end of the Mackinac Bridge. Its Wikipedia lead describes it as divided between Cheboygan and Emmet counties: the downtown district and much of the development lie in Mackinaw Township, Cheboygan County, while the larger portion of the village by area is in Wawatam Township, Emmet County. The 2020 census counted 846 residents across 7.65 square miles, of which 3.44 is land and 4.21 is water, and the village's economy is dominated by tourism built on Fort Michilimackinac, two lighthouses, the bridge and its two ferry lines.

History of Mackinaw City

  • The name Mackinaw is a respelling of Mackinac, the strait between Lake Huron and Lake Michigan, ultimately from Ojibwe mishinii-makinaang, 'at the place of many snapping turtles'. Historic tribes of the area included the Ojibwe, Ottawa and Potawatomi, collectively the Council of Three Fires.
  • The first European to pass the site of Mackinaw City was Jean Nicolet, sent out from Quebec City by Samuel Champlain in 1633, and Father Jacques Marquette established a mission on Mackinac Island in 1671.
  • Mackinaw City's first European settlement came in 1715 when the French built Fort Michilimackinac.

Landmarks and Places in Mackinaw City

  • Fort Michilimackinac, built by the French in 1715, and Michilimackinac State Park around it. Camping began in the state park in 1907 and was halted in 1971 when a maritime park opened in 1972 around the lighthouse.
  • Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse, which began operation in 1889 with an adjacent Fog Signal Building built in 1906. It was decommissioned immediately after the Mackinac Bridge was completed in 1957 and was opened to the public in 2004.
  • McGulpin Point Light, which operated between 1869 and 1906.

The Mackinaw City Economy

  • Tourism dominates the local economy, and the village's own municipal site states that the community hosts over 1.2 million visitors each year alongside 100 or more retail shops, attractions, marinas, restaurants, hotels, bed and breakfasts and campgrounds.
  • Two ferry companies operate out of Mackinaw City, connecting tourists and commuters to Mackinac Island: Shepler's Ferry and Star Line Ferry.
  • The village was a vital port for train ferries crossing the Straits beginning in the 1890s. Auto ferries had been running since the early 1900s and ended in 1957 after the completion of the Mackinac Bridge, while train ferries crossed the Straits until 1984.

Community Life in Mackinaw City

  • Mackinaw City Public Schools provides local students with education, operating two schools in the same building, an elementary school for grades K to 5 and a junior-senior high school for grades 6 to 12.
  • The Mackinac Bridge Walk was first held in 1958 and has been held annually on Labor Day since 1959. Thousands of people, traditionally led by the governor of Michigan, cross the five-mile span on foot from St. Ignace to Mackinaw City, and it is the only day of the year that hikers can hike this section of the North Country National Scenic Trail.
  • Mackinaw City is within the Roman Catholic Diocese of Gaylord and the Episcopal Diocese of Eastern Michigan.
