History of Maple City
- The settlement began in 1866 when William Parks and J. T. Sturtevant built a shoe peg factory on land carrying several hundred acres of maple timber, and the place that grew around it was known at first as Peg Town. When a post office was applied for, the name Maple was chosen, and the office was established on March 9, 1875 under the name Maple City. William H. Crowell, who had bought the shoe peg factory that year, served as first postmaster. The factory burned in 1880. In 1882 Crowell built a sawmill, and it ran until 1916.
