About Midland, Michigan
Midland sits where the Chippewa River meets the Tittabawassee, a city of roughly 42,500 that one chemist rebuilt around the brine under its feet. Herbert H. Dow turned that brine into The Dow Chemical Company in 1897, and his son Alden, an apprentice of Frank Lloyd Wright, spent fifty years filling the town with more than 130 buildings. The result is an unlikely mid-century modern showcase in mid-Michigan, complete with a three-legged footbridge, the longest canopy walk in the United States, and an LPGA tournament.
History of Midland
- Began in the late 1820s as an American Fur Company fur-trading post, then grew as a lumbering settlement in the 1830s. The name comes from the county, which sits roughly in the middle of Michigan's Lower Peninsula.
- Herbert Henry Dow (1866-1930) built his business on a cheaper method of extracting bromine from local brine, founding the Midland Chemical Company (1890), the Dow Process Company (1895) and The Dow Chemical Company (1897). Dow Chemical incorporated in 1900, consolidating all of his Midland properties.
- Brine deposits made the area the world's largest producer of bromine by 1888, and the city expanded with the company's growth.
