About Monroe, Michigan

Monroe is the seat of Monroe County on the River Raisin near the western shore of Lake Erie, roughly between Detroit and Toledo. Founded as the French settlement of Frenchtown in 1785 and renamed for President James Monroe, it was the site of the deadliest battle of the War of 1812 on Michigan soil and the boyhood home of George Armstrong Custer. Today it is an industrial and Great Lakes port city, and the world headquarters of La-Z-Boy.
