About Muskegon, Michigan
Muskegon is a Lake Michigan port city on the state's west shore, built where the Muskegon River meets a deep natural harbor. Once the self-proclaimed 'Lumber Queen of the World,' with dozens of sawmills feeding a booming timber trade, it reinvented itself as a manufacturing town and then a lakeshore resort of sugar-sand beaches, a WWII submarine museum, and a busy summer festival calendar. Its name comes from an Ottawa word for 'marshy river.'
History of Muskegon
- The name derives from the Ottawa word 'mashkiigong' (also rendered Masquigon), meaning 'marshy river or swamp.'
- Euro-American settlement took off around 1837 alongside heavy exploitation of the region's white pine forests, drawing settlers from Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden.
- With roughly 32 sawmills operating by 1870, Muskegon earned its title 'Lumber Queen of the World.'
