About Newkirk, Michigan
Newkirk Township is a sparsely populated civil township in Lake County, Michigan, twelve miles by six, bounded roughly by the Pine River on the north and the Little Manistee River on the south. About half its area lies in the Pere Marquette State Forest, with more in the Manistee National Forest, and the village of Luther straddles its eastern edge. Logging built it, farming followed, and hunting, fishing and trail recreation now carry much of the local economy.
History of Newkirk
- The township was organized in 1871 under the name Killbuck, became Glencoe in 1875, and was reorganized as Newkirk Township in 1899. Its 12-by-6-mile size and location have been unchanged since that date (Newkirk Township official history).
- It is named for Henry Wirt Newkirk (1854-1946), who came to Lake County to publish the Luther Enterprise newspaper, was appointed and then elected Lake County prosecuting attorney around 1889-1892, served three terms in the Michigan House of Representatives, and was mayor of Ann Arbor from 1931 to 1933.
- Pioneer settlement began about 1862, with families traveling north from Grand Rapids on the State Road, a straight freight road cut through virgin timber toward Traverse City. The main street of Luther is part of that frontier trail, and Luther's original plat was recorded March 13, 1882.
