About Northfield, Michigan
Northfield Township is the strip of Washtenaw County where US-23 runs north out of Ann Arbor and the farmland gives way to a 750-acre lake with a downtown wrapped around it. It holds the oldest English-speaking Catholic parish in Michigan, a hand-built octagonal house from 1864, and a winter pond hockey tournament that has run since 2008. About 8,500 people live across its 36 square miles, most of them within reach of Whitmore Lake's water.
History of Northfield
- Established in 1832 as a civil township in Washtenaw County, with a post office first opened here on June 9, 1834 and named after the township.
- Irish Catholics began settling this part of Michigan in the early 19th century. Father Patrick O'Kelly, from Kilkenny, Ireland, arrived in 1829 to minister to them, and the parish property was purchased in 1831.
- Whitmore Lake was settled in 1825 by surveyors Jonathan Stratton and Luke Whitmore, both out of Ann Arbor. Stratton proposed naming the settlement for Whitmore, who owned land in the area and became the county's first treasurer in 1829.

- St. Patrick's Parish Complex, at Northfield Church and Whitmore Lake Roads. Red brick Gothic Revival church completed 1878 on a rough-hewn stone foundation, with a square central tower topped by an octagonal spire and a rectory added 1889-90. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places April 23, 1982 and designated a Michigan State Historic Site December 14, 1976.
- Nathan B. Devereaux Octagon House, 66425 Eight Mile Road. Built 1864, a 1.5-story octagonal frame structure with hipped roof and octagonal cupola on a fieldstone foundation. Listed on the National Register April 2, 2003.
- Whitmore Lake itself, roughly 750 acres, plus Horseshoe Lake to the south, Lawton Lake to the east and Monahan Lake to the northeast.
