About Norton Shores, Michigan

Norton Shores is a Lake Michigan shoreline city in southwestern Muskegon County, blessed with more than six miles of beach, towering forested dunes at Hoffmaster State Park, and two inland lakes. Born from an 1840s sawmill and fruit-growing township, it incorporated as a city in 1968 to fend off annexation and has become the suburban retail and residential anchor of the Muskegon area. It is nationally famous each December for the Mona Shores Singing Christmas Tree, billed as America's tallest.

History of Norton Shores

  • Norton Township was organized in 1845 by settlers from Mill Point (now Spring Lake) and named for Col. Amos Norton, a Canadian patriot implicated in the Rebellion of 1837.
  • The township was separated from Ottawa County and joined Muskegon County in 1859.
  • The first sawmill, Robinson's Mill, was built in 1847 at the head of Black Lake (now Mona Lake).

Landmarks and Places in Norton Shores

  • P.J. Hoffmaster State Park, known for its forested dune complexes and Lake Michigan shoreline, home to the Gillette Sand Dune Visitor Center.
  • Mona Lake and Mona Lake Park, the inland lake at the city's north end.
  • Little Black Lake at the city's south end.

The Norton Shores Economy

  • Manufacturing is the largest employment sector (roughly 2,600 workers, about 23% of local jobs), followed by health care and social assistance and then retail trade.
  • Serves as the main retail and commercial hub for the greater Muskegon area, with big-box corridors such as Lakes Crossing near Harvey Street.
  • Fruit growing was historically a major profitable industry after the mills closed.

Community Life in Norton Shores

  • The Mona Shores Singing Christmas Tree, performed by a roughly 180-student choir on a 67-foot living-tree stage lit with about 25,000 LED lights, is billed as America's tallest singing Christmas tree.
  • Mona Shores Public Schools anchor community identity; Mona Shores High School alumni include NHL forward Justin Abdelkader, NFL tight end Tyree Jackson, and Emmy-winning Rick and Morty writer/producer Tom Kauffman.
  • Outdoor and beach recreation along Lake Michigan, Mona Lake and Little Black Lake are central to local life.
