Onekama is a village in Manistee County, Michigan, laid along the northeast shore of Portage Lake and ringed by Onekama Township. Its name comes from the Anishinaabe Ona-ga-maa, rendered by the source as "singing water," and the article gives the pronunciation as oh-NEK-uh-muh. The 2020 census counted 399 residents in 0.59 square miles (1.52 sq km), all of it land. Elevation is 607 feet (185 m), at 44 deg 21 min 49 sec N, 86 deg 12 min 18 sec W. The village lies 13 miles northeast of Manistee, the county seat, 10 miles south of Arcadia, and 3 miles east of Lake Michigan beyond Portage Lake's outlet. History of Onekama
- The village's predecessor was the settlement of Portage at Portage Point, established in 1845 at the western end of Portage Lake where Portage Creek drained out.
- In 1871 landowners around the then land-locked lake cut a channel through the narrow isthmus themselves, dropping Portage Lake by 12 to 14 feet and bringing it level with Lake Michigan.
- The cut dried out Portage Creek on May 14, 1871. The settlement, which had been designated Onekama with a post office only the week before, relocated onto the newly exposed lake bed on the northeast shore, beside an older settlement called Brookfield.
