About Owosso Township, Michigan
Owosso Township, formally named Owosso Charter Township, is a charter township of Shiawassee County in Michigan, with the county stated in its opening sentence. The 2020 census counted 4,765 people over 32.15 square miles, of which 31.61 is land and 0.74 water, or 2.30 percent, at an elevation of 768 feet or 234 meters and centered near 42 degrees 59 minutes 51 seconds north, 84 degrees 12 minutes 38 seconds west. The township borders the city of Owosso on the east, but the article is explicit that the two are administered autonomously. Mail runs under the Ovid 48866 and Owosso 48867 ZIP codes with area code 989, FIPS code 26-61960 and GNIS feature ID 1626876.
History of Owosso Township
- Owosso Township carries the fullest documented chronology of the seven, because it functioned as the parent unit from which much of northern Shiawassee County was carved. Its first non-Native settlers arrived in 1835, named by the article as Elias Comstock, Kilburn Bedell and Lewis Findley, who was Bedell's father-in-law, and the first building at Big Rapids went up in 1836. Shiawassee County was organized as a single township of the same name on March 23, 1836, and Owosso Township was split off from Shiawassee Township on March 11, 1837, taking the northern half of the county across eight township survey areas. Subdivision then ran in stages: on March 21, 1839 the Middlebury and Fairfield areas left as Middlebury Township while survey area 7 north range 4 east went to Vernon Township, the following day Caledonia was detached short five sections, on February 16, 1842 those sections were transferred to complete Caledonia, the organizational act of March 20, 1848 formed New Haven Township from the New Haven and Hazelton areas, and a later act created Rush Township from the northern survey area, leaving Owosso with a single survey area. A post office opened at Big Rapids on November 4, 1838 under the spelling Owasso with postmaster Daniel Ball, and that same year Big Rapids or Owasso was platted by Daniel Gould for the owners, the Williamses. The spelling Owosso came into general use by 1844, the city of Owosso incorporated separately in 1859, and the post office adopted the newer spelling officially on June 8, 1875. The article attributes the township's name to an American Indian chief it calls Wasso, and states that Wasso and his tribe were moved from this area by the United States under the 1836 treaty to a reservation.
Landmarks and Places in Owosso Township
- Burton - unincorporated community on S. Baldwin Road at McBride Road, about 4.5 miles west of the city of Owosso, established as Mungerville in 1864 (GNIS 622336).
- Five Points - unincorporated community at M-21, Priest Road and Smith Road, also called Five Points West or West Five Points (GNIS 626117).
- Smith Crossing - unincorporated community at Wilkinson and Smith roads near the Great Lakes Central Railroad crossing (GNIS 1617854).
The Owosso Township Economy
- The article publishes no economy section, but it documents the railway that shaped the township's western side. Before January 22, 1864 the Detroit and Milwaukee Railroad ran through the west of the township and opened a station named Mungerville, where a post office opened on that date under postmaster Philander Munger; the office was renamed Burton in 1878 and closed on January 31, 1936. A second rail presence survives at Smith Crossing, on the Great Lakes Central Railroad line. Road access is by M-21 and M-52, and the Owosso Community Airport lies just east in Caledonia Township rather than within Owosso Township itself.
Community Life in Owosso Township
- The township is categorized among Michigan placenames of Native American origin, and its name history is the article's central cultural thread, running from the chief the article calls Wasso through the Owasso post-office spelling to the modern Owosso. Its settlement names preserve a rail-era layer: Mungerville became Burton, Five Points is also recorded as Five Points West and West Five Points, and Smith Crossing is named for its railroad crossing. The county-level source the article leans on for its ghost-town material is a September 2000 Argus-Press feature on the lapsed post offices of Shiawassee County, which is where several of these communities are documented.
