About Pearl Beach, Michigan

Pearl Beach is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in St. Clair County, Michigan, inside Clay Township, and at 4,698 people in the 2020 census it is the largest of this group. The CDP is a narrow strip along the north side of the North Channel of the St. Clair River, running from the western border of Algonac east to the point where the North Channel flows into Anchor Bay. It covers 5.65 square miles, 4.80 of them land and 14.87 percent water, at 577 feet, the lowest elevation in this batch. M-29, locally Pointe Tremble Road, runs west to east through it along the channel's northern shore. Mail comes through Algonac's 48001 and children attend Algonac Community Schools.

History of Pearl Beach

  • This shoreline was settled early. The article records a dozen private land claims made by the French as early as 1796 along the North Channel connecting Anchor Bay to the St. Clair River, which is 71 years earlier than the oldest settlement date in any other record in this wave. A post office opened under the single-word name Pearlbeach on August 2, 1898, with Harry Bryant, an agent for the Detroit and St. Clair Railroad, serving as the first postmaster. In early 1926 the Detroit developer Will St. John platted an exclusive 147-lot residential subdivision here called The Colony, marketed to well-off professionals as a secluded neighbourhood with ready access to Lake St. Clair. By 1929 only three lots had houses on them, one of them St. John's own, and the Great Depression ended the scheme, though the area later became attractive as a residential centre.

Landmarks and Places in Pearl Beach

  • Colony Tower Complex, 6503 Dyke Road on M-29 - a 136-foot decorative water tower clad in steel plate to look like a lighthouse, 28 feet across at the base and narrowing toward the top, with The Colony written on the outside, deep-set windows, a catwalk and a conical roof. Inside the cladding is a 60,000-gallon steel tank on six columns with struts and tie rods. Chicago Bridge and Iron erected it in 1926 for Will St. John, who added a beacon as an advertising gimmick; it served as an active lighthouse until 1937. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994, with the gatehouse added in 1995, and also a designated Michigan State Historic Site (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colony_Tower_Complex).
  • The Colony gatekeeper's cottage and garage - Tudor Revival buildings with high gabled roofs, white stuccoed walls and half-timbering in the gables, reached by a semicircular drive off Dyke Road and a narrow lane crossing a small canal behind the tower (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colony_Tower_Complex).
  • Harsens Island Ferry Landing - in the eastern portion of the CDP, crossing the North Channel to M-154 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pearl_Beach,_St._Clair_County,_Michigan).

The Pearl Beach Economy

  • The article documents transport rather than trade. The Harsens Island Ferry Landing sits in the eastern portion of the CDP, crossing the North Channel to connect with M-154 on Harsens Island. M-29 carries through traffic along the northern shore. No employer, retail or commercial figures are published for Pearl Beach, so none are given.

Community Life in Pearl Beach

  • Pearl Beach contains a second named settlement inside its own boundary: the unincorporated community of Pointe aux Tremble, settled in 1904 as a station along the railway about 3.0 miles west of Algonac. The wider Clay Township setting is a river delta of channels and marsh, with the St. John's Marsh State Wildlife Area, a 3,060-acre state holding, extending small portions into the CDP. Across the channel, Harsens Island was named for Jacob Harsen, who came from Albany, New York around 1779 and bought the island from local Native Americans in 1783; it was still being called Jacob Island as late as 1809, and the island's post office name changed from Sans Souci to Harsens Island in 1960.
