About Plymouth, Michigan

Plymouth is a walkable, affluent western suburb of Detroit built around Kellogg Park, a leafy downtown town square ringed by more than 75 boutiques and restaurants. It was the birthplace of the Daisy BB gun and is famous today for hosting the largest ice-carving festival in North America. Historic, independent, and surrounded by (but separate from) Plymouth Township, it blends small-town charm with metro-Detroit polish.

History of Plymouth

  • First settled in 1825 by Luther Lincoln, who built a sawmill near the Rouge River.
  • Incorporated as a village in 1867 and became a city in 1932.
  • George A. Starkweather persuaded the Detroit and Howell Railroad to run through town in the 1860s; after his 1907 death, Oak Street was renamed Starkweather in his honor, and many downtown streets carry Starkweather-family names.

Landmarks and Places in Plymouth

  • Kellogg Park, the central downtown square that anchors the shopping and festival district.
  • Historic Old Village along Liberty Street, Plymouth's original railroad-era North Village.

The Plymouth Economy

  • Historic industrial anchor was Daisy Manufacturing (Daisy Outdoor Products), which made BB guns in Plymouth until moving its headquarters to Rogers, Arkansas in 1958; the old factory became Daisy Square Condominiums in 2003.
  • USA Hockey Arena (opened 1996 as Compuware Sports Arena) hosts USA Hockey's National Team Development Program, relocated from Ann Arbor in 2015.

Community Life in Plymouth

  • Plymouth Ice Festival (Ice Spectacular), founded in 1982 by 25-year-old Scott Lorenz, is billed as the largest ice-carving festival in North America and draws roughly 500,000 visitors each late January.
  • Art in the Park, held since 1980, is one of Michigan's largest art fairs.
  • The Green Street Fair, launched in 2008, is a spring sustainability festival that drew about 90,000 people in 2011; the Fall Festival runs the weekend after Labor Day.
