About Port Huron, Michigan

Port Huron sits at the southern tip of Lake Huron where the St. Clair River begins, the easternmost point of land in Michigan and the U.S. anchor of the Blue Water Bridge to Sarnia, Ontario. A onetime lumber and shipbuilding boomtown, it raised a young Thomas Edison and lent its name to the 1962 Port Huron Statement. Today it bills itself the "Maritime Capital of the Great Lakes," packed with lighthouses, museums, and one of the country's great freshwater sailing traditions.

History of Port Huron

  • French explorer Daniel Greysolon Duluth established Fort St. Joseph near the future Blue Water Bridge site in 1686.
  • Fort Gratiot was built at the base of Lake Huron in 1814, considered the first organized settlement in the area.
  • Incorporated as a village in 1849 and as a city on February 3, 1857, consolidating the villages of Fort Gratiot, Desmond, Huron, and Peru; became St. Clair County seat in 1871.

Landmarks and Places in Port Huron

  • Fort Gratiot Lighthouse (built 1829, the first lighthouse in Michigan)
  • Blue Water Bridge to Sarnia, Ontario (first span 1938, second span 1997)
  • Thomas Edison Depot Museum, inside the 1858 Grand Trunk Railway depot where Edison worked

The Port Huron Economy

  • 19th-century wealth came from lumber and shipbuilding along the St. Clair and Black rivers.
  • Diverse manufacturing history included chicory (coffee-substitute) processing, steam-tractor maker Upton Manufacturing (over 6,000 units, 1890-1920), WWI shell casings from Mueller Metals, paper mills, and Peerless Cement (1924-1973).
  • Current employers include SMR Automotive (rearview mirrors), Mueller Industries (valves and fittings), and hospitals McLaren Port Huron and Lake Huron Medical Center.

Community Life in Port Huron

  • The Blue Water Festival, still widely called "Boat Week," celebrates the Port Huron to Mackinac Boat Race, one of the longest freshwater races in the world, first run in 1925.
  • "Boat Night" on the Black River draws thousands of spectators to the docked yachts the evening before the race.
  • Cultural institutions include the International Symphony Orchestra of Sarnia and Port Huron and the Port Huron Civic Theatre (since 1956).
