About Rapid City, Michigan
Rapid City is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Clearwater Township, Kalkaska County, Michigan, about eight miles northwest of the village of Kalkaska. Its 2020 population was 1,357, barely changed from 1,352 in 2010. The community takes its name from the Rapid River, which flows through it, and it lies immediately next to Torch Lake in the Traverse City metropolitan area, using the 49676 ZIP code in area code 231.
History of Rapid City
- A post office opened in the area on November 22, 1892 under the name Van Buren, was respelled Vanburen on January 18, 1895, and finally became Rapid City on April 30, 1898, taking the river's name. The community entered federal statistics much later: it was listed as a newly organized census-designated place for the 2010 census, which gave it defined boundaries and its own published counts for the first time. The CDP is organized for statistical purposes only and has no legal status as an incorporated municipality.
