About Reese, Michigan
Reese is a village of 1,261 at the 2020 census in Michigan's Thumb region, and it straddles a county line. Almost all of it lies in Denmark Township, Tuscola County, with only a tiny portion in Blumfield Township, Saginaw County. It began in the 1860s as two adjoining settlements, Gates and Reese, that merged under the railroad's name, and the surrounding area is still heavily agricultural.
History of Reese
- The area was first settled in 1865, when Louisa Woodruff and her son built the first home near what is now the intersection of Reese and Saginaw roads.
- In the fall of 1865, A.W. Gates, a stage proprietor from Saginaw, established a plank road from East Saginaw through the settlement to Watrousville. It opened in 1871, the same year Gates set up a mail and stage route along it. The post office, also opened in 1871, was named Gates after him.
- In 1873 the Detroit and Bay City Railroad came through and Hudson B. Blackman platted a tract adjoining Gates, naming it Reese in honor of railroad superintendent Alvin H. Reese. Blackman also donated the right-of-way and the grounds the depot sat on.
Landmarks and Places in Reese
- Reese Crossing, where the east-west Pere Marquette route meets the north-south Michigan Central branch line between Denmark Junction and Bay City. It was never an interlocking but was protected by a target set by approaching train crews, and the depot served both railroads.
- The grain elevator standing along the north-south rail line through the village.
- The intersection of Reese and Saginaw roads, where the first home in the area was built in 1865 and where Joseph Stark opened a hotel in 1873.
The Reese Economy
- The area continues to be largely agricultural. Corn, soybeans, navy beans and sugar beets are the major crops, with very little dairy or other livestock.
- The railroad carried timber, limestone and produce to markets throughout Michigan, and in the early 1900s local farmers used it to ship hogs and cattle to Detroit.
- The C&O Railway bought the line in 1946, it passed to CSX Transportation after the 1985 C&O and B&O combination, and the Huron and Eastern Railway purchased it in 1988 and still operates it. Reese-area farmers are one of the Huron and Eastern's major shippers.

- Reese Public Schools operates the village's public schools, and the district website carries the line 'Home of the Rockets'.
- Reese Elementary School houses kindergarten through fifth grade and Reese High School houses sixth through twelfth grades, after the middle school closed at the end of the 2014-15 school year.
- Two parochial elementary schools serve the district: St. Elizabeth, a Catholic school with grades kindergarten through eighth, and Trinity Lutheran, also kindergarten through eighth. Nearby Richville, also in the Reese district, has St. Michael's Lutheran School.
