About Reynolds, Michigan
Reynolds Township is the northwest corner of Montcalm County, a 36-square-mile square of light sandy loam that was solid white pine until eleven saw and shingle mills cut it flat between 1869 and 1880. Its village, Howard City, grew out of a railroad depot platted in 1868 and is now the crossroads where US-131, M-46 and M-82 meet, with the 92-mile Fred Meijer White Pine Trail running straight through town on the old Grand Rapids and Indiana grade. The township counted 5,431 residents in 2020, up 24.1 percent in ten years, and its village skews young with a median age of 32.2.
History of Reynolds
- Reynolds Township occupies Township 12 north, Range 10 west. It was carved from Pierson Township and organized on May 17, 1869, when 'the electors assembled and elected the necessary officers.' David Swarthout was first supervisor and Horatio L. Wheeler first clerk.
- Only 32 voters were present at organization. By 1880, 222 votes were cast, a measure of how fast the mills filled the township.
- Harvey R. Stevens built the first sawmill on section 32; it burned in 1873. A. R. Stevens and David Lord built a larger mill on section 33. By 1880 there were eleven shingle and saw mills operating in the township.
Landmarks and Places in Reynolds
- Fred Meijer White Pine Trail State Park, 92 miles from northern Grand Rapids to Cadillac on the graded path of the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad, later absorbed by the Pennsylvania Railroad. Howard City is one of 16 communities along it. The state park was established in 1996 and the trail was fully paved as of fall 2023.

The Reynolds Economy
- Pine first. Eleven saw and shingle mills by 1880 cleared the land and drew the settlers who farmed it afterward.
- Manufacturing followed: the Hudson Knife factory and the Skinner and Steenman sideboard factory were among the earliest businesses. Hudson Knife became Joslin and eventually the Olsen Knife Company.
- Rail commerce built the village. The Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad ran through the township, and Howard City's growth accelerated with the completion of the Detroit, Lansing and Northern; the Detroit, Grand Rapids and Western depot opened in 1869.
Community Life in Reynolds
- The Harvest Festival is the village's signature event, run by a volunteer committee that meets the second Wednesday of each month from February through October at 125 E. Shaw Street. The 2026 festival is set for September 12.
- Music in the Park, Easter events, Halloween activities, a Tree Lighting ceremony and a village Clean Up Day fill out the annual calendar.
