Sanborn Township is a Lake Huron township in southern Alpena County with 2,084 residents at the 2020 census. Of its 49.72 square miles, 5.94 square miles are water. Its principal settlement is Ossineke, a census-designated place at the mouth of the Devils River on US-23, several miles south of Alpena.
History of Sanborn
- Ossineke's name comes from the Anishinaabe (Ojibwa or Ottawa) language, from zhingaabewasiniigigaabawaad, meaning 'where the image stones stood.' The modern Anishinaabe name asiniike means 'to quarry.'
- Local tradition holds that sacred image stones embodying the spirit of Chief Shinggabaw stood at the site. After rival tribes stole them, the Great Spirit is said to have returned the stones and destroyed the raiding party; a white fisherman later took them to use as anchors for fishing nets in Lake Huron.
- Dinosaur Gardens was begun in 1935 by folk artist Paul N. Domke on a 40-acre tract of drained swampland.
